Digital competence of candidates
Candidates for first-cycle and second-cycle studies at the University of Warsaw are expected to demonstrate basic digital competence, enabling them to take part in the recruitment process (ability to use a computer and the Internet), as well as participate in teaching activities that use distance learning methods and techniques.
Basic digital competence includes:
- text editors (e.g. Microsoft Word, Libre Office Writer),
- spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Libre Office Calc),
- web browsers (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari),
- electronic mail.
At the University of Warsaw we assume that candidates for first-cycle and second-cycle studies gain basic digital competence during their previous education. However, abilities necessary for studying at the University of Warsaw can also be obtained during the course in the area of the Information Technology which is obligatory for first-year students of first-cycle programmes, as well as during trainings in the use of the University Study-Oriented System (USOS) organised by the units conducting studies at the beginning of the academic year (during Fresher’s Days).
In case of educational classes conducted using distance learning methods and techniques, the use of team collaboration applications (e.g. Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom), as well as the ability to navigate the educational platforms are required. According to the recommendation of the University Council of Education at the University of Warsaw, students should receive training in the use of the IT tools, necessary for participation in online classes before they begin. In particular, students should be informed on how to access the platform used for conducting the classes.
The Digital Competence Centre UW (CKC UW) operating at the University of Warsaw, offers complex support for the academic community in conscious and effective use of digital solutions in the area of scientific research, didactics and administrative work.
The CKC team is responsible for maintenance and development of the university-wide e-learning platform called Kampus and offers its users permanent technical support.
Main IT systems which are used by our candidates and students are the system of the Internet Recruitment of Candidates (IRK), the University Study-Oriented System (USOS) and university-wide e-learning platform, Kampus. Members of the academic community who do not have their own computer equipment can use the equipment available at the University of Warsaw Library (BUW) and their respective teaching units.
